Peltier Glass in sixty seconds

The company began as the Novelty Glass Company in 1886, took the Peltier Glass Company name in 1919 and started making marbles around 1927 in Ottawa, Illinois. Its output includes slags, patches, ribbons and cat’s-eyes, along with less attributable single-colour marbles.

Peltier used more than one production approach, so there is no single “Peltier seam” that settles every case. Identify the family first.

The big Peltier families

   Peerless Patch

   A two-colour patch with characteristic curved or S-like patch edges and recognisable colour combinations. Straight-edged patches deserve another look.

   Picture Marble

   A Peerless Patch carrying a fired black transfer of a known comic character. Character, transfer, base marble, size and authenticity all matter.

   National Line Rainbo

   An opaque base with multiple thin surface ribbons. Collector nicknames such as Superman, Rebel or Bumblebee refer to particular colour arrangements.

   Rainbo

   A later two-seam ribboned family, commonly with ribbons or pairs of ribbons circling the equator on opaque, translucent or transparent base glass.

   Banana cat’s-eye

   A clear marble with a single opaque vane whose curved shape suggests a banana.

   Slag and Miller-machine swirl

   Earlier single-stream types. Fine feathering is associated with Peltier slags, while Miller-machine multicolour swirls should not be mistaken for later ribboned Rainbos.

A note on National Line Rainbo nicknames

Names such as Superman, Christmas Tree, Rebel and Golden Rebel are useful shorthand only when the base and ribbon colours fit the accepted combination. Online sellers sometimes stretch a popular nickname to cover a near match.

Write down base colour, ribbon colours, ribbon count, seam placement, aventurine and diameter. Then compare with several known examples. That small notebook entry beats memory every time.

Picture Marbles need an authenticity pause

Peltier Picture Marbles are a popular target for reproductions and mislabelled transfers. The original group uses known King Features characters on Peerless Patch marbles, typically within a recognised size range and colour combination.

Do not buy from a tiny front photograph alone. Ask for the reverse, seams, diameter, surface close-ups and provenance. For a major purchase, seek an experienced in-hand opinion.
